Since 2021, CBRNE Ltd, as a partner in the ALIGNER project, has been working with researchers, policy makers and law enforcement personnel to co-produce guidelines and recommendations for the ethical use of AI in crime prevention to strengthen law enforcement and benefit the public. Key outputs from ALIGNER include publicly available deliverables to support AI-related goals:
- The policy and research roadmap provides an overview of technology needs and challenges. The roadmap includes nine policy recommendations, e.g. specific training for law enforcement officers to increase awareness of AI risks. It also identifies 19 research areas, such as the fairness and transparency of judicial decisions.
- ALIGNER has also produced a Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (AFRIA), developed by CBRNE and KUL which consists of two templates to help LEAs identify and assess the impact of an AI system on individuals’ fundamental rights. Recently, the ALIGNER results were published in six languages in the ‘Results in Brief’ on the European Commission CORDIS website: https://cordis.europa.eu/article/id/456251-a-roadmap-for-ai-technology-in-law-enforcement
